Karaikudi is located between Rameswaram and Trichy and it belongs to Sivaganga district. The significance of the name Karaikudi is that, in earlier days there was a big tree called Karai, which has spread all over Karaikudi and the town was named after that. This city is well connected with main places by Railways and Roadways. Karaikudi is famous for Allagappa group of institutions. It was founded by Allagappar during 1947. There are many temples in Karaikudi. The famous temple is Pillaiyar Patti which is 12 km from Karaikudi. The other specialty of Karaikudi is Sri Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple, the deity is Lord Shiva and there is an another temple where there are 108 statues of Ganapathy. In the centre there is a temple called Koppudaiaamman temple where it is located at a place called Kallukatti. Kavi Chakravarthy Kamban was born in Karaikudi. There are many places in Karaikudi which is of historic importance and all of these are good picnic spots. Kundrakudi Murugan Kovil is located 8 kms from Karaikudi. There are Lord Moolavar, Lord Thenootrunathar and Godesses Ammai Shrines in this temple.
